How to layer a serum and a cream

If you own both a serum and a cream, you have probably wondered whether the order matters. It does, and the rule is simpler than most routines make it look: serum before moisturizer, every time. Thinnest first, richest last.

A serum is a light, fast-absorbing formula built to carry concentrated ingredients into the skin. A cream, your moisturizer, is heavier: built to nourish and to seal everything in.

Put the cream on first and you have built a barrier before the serum ever arrives. Put the serum on first and each layer does its job.

The order, start to finish

Cleanse, then apply your serum to skin that is still slightly damp. This matters most with hyaluronic acid, a humectant, which means it works by drawing water in: give it damp skin and it has water to pull from.

A minute out of the shower, or a splash of water patted mostly dry, is the sweet spot.

Let the serum settle for a moment. It does not need to be fully dry, just absorbed enough that your fingertips no longer slide. Rushing this step is how products end up pilling into little rolls instead of sinking in.

Then apply your cream. Its job now is twofold: delivering its own ingredients, and locking in the serum underneath.

This is why the pairing outperforms either product alone. The serum brings the concentration, the cream keeps it there.

Morning versus night

The order stays the same around the clock; the products can change. Mornings favor lighter textures that sit well under sunscreen. Evenings are where richer creams earn their keep, because skin repairs itself most actively overnight and a heavier formula has hours to work undisturbed.

When you add more steps

The same logic scales. Eye contour products go on before the face cream, since they are lighter and target a delicate area. Face oils, if you use one, go last of all: oil seals better than anything, and nothing water-based penetrates it well.

The honest caveat

More layers is not automatically better skin. Two well-chosen products applied in the right order will outperform six applied at random, and your skin will tell you quickly if a combination is too much. If you are not sure where to start, our skin quiz points you to the pairing that fits your skin, and every YU order is covered by a 30-day guarantee, so trying the right routine carries no risk.
